Carbon Footprint is a measure of how much Carbon Dioxide (Co2) is released into the atmosphere by a person’s daily activities. There is a strong correlation between the amount of (Co2) released and the amount of energy, usually electricity, a person used per day. So, someone who lives in, say Vermont, uses a lot more energy during the winter months to keep his house warm. Someone from Florida will use more energy in the summer when he turns his air-conditioner full blast to ward off the summer heat. Climate Change is Debatable But Not Really
Climate Change is one of those debatable, but not really, topics of the 21st century. It is debatable because there are those who question whether it is actually caused by human activity. At the same time, it is not really debatable. Even if human activity contributes only a small amount to climate change, we should still do something about it. Reduce Energy Use The way to this is to reduce the amount of energy we use in a day. Using less electricity at home is a good first step. Turn-off lights when we don’t need them. Wear light clothing instead of turning the air-con to the max. Wear multiple layers of clothing instead of turning up the heater. The types of products we use can also affect our carbon footprint. For example, reducing the use of disposable products can help with climate change. The reason for this is because disposables need to be replaced. The replacements need to be manufactured and thus increase the Co2 in the atmosphere. Try Not to Use Cars Reducing the use of cars is another way to reduce our carbon footprint. Since each household tends to use some means of transportation the energy used for transport counts. A very fuel inefficient SUV or semi-truck is the worst unless there is a business need to have such power. A smart car is good since it is fuel efficient. But commuting using public transport is best. Mass transport like buses or subways moves large numbers of people with the least amount of energy cost. Finally, try to cut down on replacing consumer electronics. Smartphones and computers are very energy intensive to produce. So replacing your iPhone or Laptop on a yearly basis might not be the most environmentally friendly thing to do.
