Another consideration is that the unit ought to give you a level of privacy that you are comfortable. A studio with no separate room might work for some people, but for others, it might just seem plain weird to others.
 
Flatmate Quality Matters
The type of person you will pick as flatmates also matter. At the very least they should be people you find trustworthy. After all, you will be sharing living space and a lot of the bills or expenses that come with living together.  
 
For most people, the obvious choice for a flatmate is their partner. But just two people sharing a flat might be too much for the average two working people.
 
Perhaps college friends would be an option. Also, workmates would be a good idea. After all the point of getting a shared flat is to get somewhere closer to one's place of work or school. Since you already know them well enough to trust them around your living spaces.
 
Make Sure Things Are Spelled Out Clearly
Before you move into your new flat, regardless of who ends up being your flatmate, it is important that all the agreements are settled beforehand. It might even be desirable to have the agreement written down in a contract.
