4 Things You Need to Know Before Buying a Home Insurance

One of the essential investments that you should have is home insurance. However, not all policies are created the same, and knowing what you are going to buy can help you pick the right insurance for your home. To help you, here are some things that you need to consider before you purchase home insurance.
1. Two Types of Coverage
Your home, when it comes to insurance, is divided into two: contents and building. The contents type covers your belongings such as furniture, electrical items, and clothes. On the other hand, the building’s insurance is for the fabric of the building, which includes built-in appliances and any permanent fixtures. Here are what these two types cover:
  • Building Insurance:
Floods, storms, fire, vandalism or malicious damage, impact from vehicles.
  • Content Insurance:
Fire damage, flood damage, theft, vandalism, and earthquake damage.

As a homeowner, it is recommended that you get both types of coverage- look for insurers that offer discounted rates for the combined content and building policies. If you are renting, your landlord should be the one responsible for building insurance.

2. Ensure that You Have Enough Coverage
If you are going to take out the building insurance, make sure that your home is covered for its rebuild value and not the market value. If you are going to calculate the value of your contents, you can go room to room and take note of the value of each item, from computers to clothes and even the contents of your fridge.

Make sure that you are accurate when doing the calculation. If you undervalue your contents, it will only leave you underinsured and overestimating will only increase the cost of your coverage.

3. Protect Valuable Items
It will be best if you talk to your insurer and get separate coverage if necessary since the basic terms of your contents coverage do not cover valuables such as antiques, jewelry, or high-spec electrical items.

4. Enhance the Security of Your House
Installing a theft alarm or smoke detector can help you enjoy discounts. Ask your insurer what are their recommendations when it comes to what kind of system you can install to obtain discounts. It can help you save on your premium eventually.

Conclusion
Having house insurance can help ensure your safety and it acts as a safety net in case something unfortunate happens. Knowing what you will purchase and understanding what it covers can help you get the insurance policy that suits your needs.

Thanks for explaining how your landlord is in charge of insurance if you are renting. I was afraid I'd have to pay for the insurance. I am glad that is not the case after all.

You make a great point about making sure that you get fire damage covered. My house recently caught fire and I wasn't covered. I'll have to get a wider policy for next time.

I want to make sure that I can pay for any damages that happen to my home. It makes sense that having the right insurance plan would be beneficial. I'll be sure to get building insurance so that I can ensure that I can pay for flooding or fire damage.

Thanks for pointing out that it is recommended to get both of the coverages and get them from those who offer discounts as well. I will follow your advice now that I will have my own home this year when I finally buy the dream house I've been saving up for. Hopefully, I will be able to find a company that I can trust with affordable premiums and rates this month.

I like how you mentioned that contents and building are your two types of home insurance. My cousin mentioned to me last night that he is planning to have a home insurance plan and asked me if I have any idea what is the best option to do when choosing an insurance company. Thanks to this informative article and I'll be sure to tell him that he can consult trusted personal insurance services as they can answer all his inquiries.

It really helped when you said that we need to make sure that the house is covered for its rebuild value and not the market value when getting home insurance. I will keep that in mind now that I will be buying a house this year after saving up for the purchase for five years. Hopefully, this will help me make the right decisions to ensure that my home will be covered in case natural disasters strike in the future.

Thank you for explaining that the basic terms of your contents coverage do not cover valuables such as antiques, jewelry, or high-spec electrical items so it's better to discuss it with your insurer to get separate coverage. That made me worry about all the antiques and art collections in my new house. I think it's best to look for a home insurance provider that offers separate coverage for them.

Thank you for mentioning that if you get building insurance, make sure it covers the rebuild value of your home rather than the market value. My mother purchased a home as an investment. I will suggest that she obtain a property insurance plan with rebuild value.

My sister and her husband moved into a new house a couple of weeks, and my sister told me on the phone last night about how she needs to find the right insurance coverage for it. I'll pass these tips along to them so they can know how to find the right insurance coverage for their new house!

Thank you for explaining how you can get discounts on your home insurance by improving the security around your home. We've been wondering if we should mention to our insurance agent that we're getting a security system installed. I'll be sure to make a call after it's in place to see if we'll need to make some changes to our policy.
